LCBA National Branch 1556 Donates Smartboard

LCBA National Branch 1556 Donates Smartboard to Greater Erie Community Action Committee’s ABLE Department

The Loyal Christian Benefit Association (LCBA), National Branch 1556, has generously donated a Smartboard to the Greater Erie Community Action Committee (GECAC) to support its Adult Basic Learning & Education (ABLE) Department. This donation will enhance educational services for individuals striving to improve their literacy, digital skills, and English language proficiency.

The Greater Erie Community Action Committee (GECAC) offers over 40 programs throughout Erie County, ranging from summer employment for area youth aged 14+ to services for senior adults. Their goal is to help individuals achieve self-sufficiency and work to lift themselves out of poverty.

Through its ABLE Department, GECAC provides free classes to County residents that focus on improving basic literacy skills, introducing digital literacy, and teaching English as a Second Language. Additionally, they offer free GED testing, giving individuals the ability to obtain their high school equivalency diploma by taking all four GED tests in a supportive, controlled environment.
GCAC strives to meet the needs of their students, who have jobs and families that require time and attention. To support them, their classes are offered either in-person or virtually, and on different days of the week and times.

The Smartboard donated by LCBA National Branch 1556 is a versatile tool designed to enhance the learning experience. The Smartboard will allow students to interact and learn with the materials on an entirely new level. In classes where English as a second language is being taught, speech and text can be translated in real time and displayed for the class in English, as well as their home language. For example, when a teacher "writes" a common sentence in English on the board, it can be translated into an individual's home language, read aloud, and better comprehended.

This Smartboard will allow GECAC to deliver more interactive and effective instruction, particularly benefiting students in the English as a Second Language program, while also supporting efforts to improve digital literacy across all ABLE programs.
